So What Do You Value in Your Team?

Think about yourself and your will think about others. That is, if you are teaming up with colleagues or with friends.

But what do you value? And what does this mean for your contribution to the team. But first things first; what do I value?

Pleasure for example. Work is not the best place to look for pleasure, but that does not mean that activities should be boring. Make sure that you get some fun in the team, it certainly increases the team spirit.

A sense of duty is required to do a job, but it is even more important in a team. Hopefully others values this as much as you do, but that does not automatically (re) solve the team results. This is also close to another attribute: responsibility.

Promotion is a very current value in organizations but will not always help the team. It is an individual value and exclusive for only part of the team. If too many colleagues value promotion you should be careful.

Taking risks is an individual value but could also be attributed to the team if most members value this equally. Taking risks is needed to innovate and requires a culture that supports making mistakes. But too much risks will destabilize the team. Stability is however a value that is often available. Both values taking risks and stability should be balanced in the team.

Cooperation is a value which is easily defined but hard to "manage". If you value cooperation you will have to subordinate your personal objectives with those of the team. Competition is the opponent of cooperation. And again both values should be equally present in the team. Without competition there will be no pressure, too much competition will destabilize the team.

There are many other values of which appreciation is normally undervalued. It is a special kind that has two faces; the demand side and the supply side. If you are in the team make sure you appreciate the other members ... not focusing on their personality, but on their input.

Take a moment and think about these values and improve your team results.
