Better Brushing Could Mean a Healthier Pregnancy

It has long been known that alcohol and drug use, as well as smoking, are contributing factors in premature births.

However, now there is mounting evidence to indicate that gum disease may also be a risk factor for pre-term labor.

In fact, according to the American Academy of Periodontology, women who are pregnant and who have periodontal disease are seven times more likely to have a baby born too early.

Current research indicates that inflammation and infection (symptomatic of gum disease) may be responsible for interfering with placental and fetal development, triggering uterine contractions that can ultimately lead to a premature delivery.

To this end, dental researchers say having a healthy mouth before and during a woman's pregnancy can alleviate this particular risk factor, and pregnant women should take special care to ensure they are brushing well.

Those who may not be brushing properly could benefit from the HydraBrush, a power toothbrush developed by California-based Oralbotic Research Inc. The brush is designed to take the human error out of brushing the teeth.

According to research conducted by the market consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, the HydraBrush "has proved to be a bridge between home dental care and professional dental care, delivering superior results over other oral cleaning systems." Because of its effectiveness and ease of use, the brush is popular among both dentists and consumers and won Frost & Sullivan's 2005 Oral and Dental Care Product of the Year Award.

With multi-brush heads that move at 810 strokes per minute as well as automatic bristle positioning and gum massaging, brushing with the HydraBrush takes only 40 seconds versus two to three minutes using a traditional toothbrush as recommended by dentists.

All the user has to do is bite into the brush heads and guide the brush slowly along the path of the teeth, gently guiding it from the front to the back and back to the front. In this way, the HydraBrush simultaneously brushes all the surfaces of the teeth, ensuring all plaque and bacteria have been removed.
